The 7th Annual West Orange Classic Film Festival

    The town where Thomas Edison invented the movies 120 years ago continues to honor its film heritage with its 7th annual West Orange Classic Film Festival.

     

    1.  Tentative schedule:    Each Sunday at 2 PM  January 8th through February 26th, 2012

    All screenings are at the newly renovated AMC Theatre in the Essex Green Shopping Center on Prospect Avenue in West Orange on Sundays at 2PM. Admission is $10.00.  ($7.50 for members of the W.O.     January 8

    THE WILD BUNCH (1969)

    directed by Sam Peckinpah
    "If they move...kill 'em!" utters Pike Bishop (William Holden), the leader of a gang of aging outlaws, while robbing a railroad office containing a cache of silver.  
    The film, which also stars Ernest Borgnine and Warren Oates, is one of the greatest westerns of all time

    DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (1965)

    directed by David Lean    
    Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago covers the years prior to, during, and after the Russian Revolution, as seen through the eyes of poet/physician Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif). Winner of five Academy Awards, including for screenwriting and cinematography.

    January 22nd

    L'ATALANTE (1934)

    directed by Jean Vigo
    Jean, the young captain of the barge, marries Juliette, a village girl who has never left home before. But when Juliette tires of her new life, she slips off the ship to discover the delights of Paris, leaving Jean heartbroken. Considered one of the most beautiful films ever made, L'Atalante became a favorite of the filmmakers of the French New Wave.

    January 29th

    WEST SIDE STORY (1961)

    directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins
    Winner of 10 Academy Awards, including director and best picture, the newly restored movie version of the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim musical celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. This iconic film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as doomed lovers from rival gangs.
    February 5

    BLACK ORPHEUS (1959)

    directed by Marcel Camus
    The ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is transplanted to the 20th Century and set against the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro in this Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film. With its eye-popping visuals, sensual love story and samba beats, you will hardly notice it is in Portuguese (with English subtitles).

    SWEETIE (1989)

    The only film in this year's festival that was directed by a woman. Before she made The Piano and Bright Star, New Zealand-born filmmaker Jane Campion directed this art-house hit about two very different sisters.
