Jeanne A. Saslow Scholarship Fund

Jeanne A. Saslow was a television producer, an artist, a WOAC Board member and active participant in the activities of the Arts Council who passed away from cancer. This scholarship fund was established in her memory.

The Jeanne A. Saslow Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding West Orange High School student to use in the pursuit of their art studies. The fund is managed by the West Orange Scholarship Fund which also works with the WOAC Board in designating each year’s recipient.  Additional contributions from the community are sought.

Jeanne was born in West Orange, attended West Orange High School and after many years in New York City, moved back to West Orange. Here, she became active as a collage and acrylics artist.  She admired the work of the all-volunteer West Orange Arts Council and became a Board Member in 2002. She was also a member of the West Essex Art Association.
Although ill for almost two years, Ms. Saslow continued to attend Board meetings and events sponsored by the Arts Council.  She had many ideas about how to expand WOAC activities and improve its outreach.

“Even when she knew she soon would die,” her husband, Dr. Arnold Saslow of West Orange told the West Orange Arts Council, “Jeanne was very excited about the establishment of this perpetual scholarship in her memory. She saw this as a way to help disadvantaged young people use art as a means of advancement.”

Dr. Saslow started the fund with a donation of $1,000 and continues to contribute annually. To date, Jeanne’s friends and supporters, as well as the general public, have added to the fund.  Dr. Saslow further stated “I intend to see that this giving as an annual event in Jeanne’s memory and that friends, family and colleagues will think of mid-February not only as Valentine’s Day, but also as a time to remember the passing of my beloved wife and her interest in the West Orange arts community.”
The first three recipients were Eric Neveloff, Amy Pratt, and Anel Hierro.  Donations to the fund of any size are welcome.
